When to book Thanksgiving and Christmas flights in 2026
Google’s October 5 analysis of five years of U.S.-departure data found Thanksgiving fares lowest around 34 days before departure, within a 21–57-day window. Christmas fares bottomed out around 56 days ahead, within 33–67 days—five days earlier than last year. These are historical averages, not guaranteed prices for your route.
Departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday averaged about 14% less than weekend flying. The purchase weekday made only about a 1.4% difference; nonstop tickets averaged 20% more than connecting flights. Compare travel dates, baggage and connection risk instead of waiting for a supposed Tuesday sale.

Holiday travel prices are running higher in 2026, but the calendar still creates real opportunities to save. The best strategy is to compare the total trip cost: airfare, hotel, ground transportation, baggage and the price of reaching the event or attraction you actually came to see.
When to book Thanksgiving flights
KAYAK’s September 29 holiday analysis found that domestic Thanksgiving fares historically reached their lowest point about five weeks before the holiday. For 2026, that points to the week of October 19 as an important comparison window. Waiting until the final two weeks can get expensive quickly.
Travel dates matter just as much. KAYAK expects November 23 to offer better domestic value than November 20, while flying on Thanksgiving Day itself may reduce fares further. These are averages rather than guarantees, so start tracking your exact route now and book when the total price fits your budget.
Christmas and New Year’s dates worth comparing
For domestic Christmas trips, December 21 and 22 are projected to offer better value than December 19. International travelers should compare December 23 and 24 against December 18. After Christmas, January 2 may offer substantial domestic savings compared with December 27, while December 31 can be a better international departure date than December 26.
If your schedule is flexible, search three to five departure dates instead of one. That simple comparison can reveal a bigger saving than switching airlines or chasing a coupon.
October route deals are specific, not universal
There is no single rule saying October flights are cheap. KAYAK’s September 30 route tracker found meaningful month-to-month drops on selected markets, including Newark to Montego Bay, Chicago to Bergen, Miami to Gregory Town and Seattle to Brussels. Other routes may move in the opposite direction.
Search from the airports you can realistically use, compare nearby airports and check the complete checkout price. A low base fare can disappear after baggage, seat and airport transportation costs are added.
Consider two one-way tickets
One airline does not have to win both halves of your trip. KAYAK found that combining separate one-way tickets could save as much as 29% domestically and 30% internationally on some holiday routes. This approach can work well, but compare baggage rules, change terms and connection risk before booking.
Where holiday interest is rising
Québec City and Punta Gorda, Florida showed strong year-over-year search growth in KAYAK’s data. Florida accounted for five of the ten fastest-growing domestic destinations in its holiday analysis. That makes Florida, the Carolinas, Atlanta and Chicago useful places to compare when your destination is flexible.
Internationally, Canada and Mexico held many of the lower-priced holiday options in the study. Long-haul fares to several destinations in Latin America, Asia and the Caribbean were also lower than a year earlier, including Cusco, Cebu City, Angeles City and Phuket.
How to judge a hotel deal
Hotel pricing varies sharply by city and event date. A property with the lowest nightly rate may cost more after resort fees, parking, rideshares and a long commute are included. For a casino, concert, tournament or theme-park trip, compare:
- The full stay price, including taxes and mandatory fees
- Distance and travel time to the venue
- Parking, shuttle and rideshare costs
- Cancellation terms
- Breakfast, Wi-Fi and other benefits you would otherwise buy
For event weekends, check the nearest hotel, the best-value hotel and the lowest-priced hotel separately. The best-value option is often the one that keeps transportation and time costs under control.
FareBandit’s practical game plan
- Track the exact route and dates you can use.
- Compare nearby airports and separate one-way tickets.
- Check the final airfare after bags and seats.
- Compare the complete hotel stay, not only the nightly rate.
- Add ground transportation before deciding which trip is cheapest.
Prices change constantly, so treat every published average as a starting point. Run a fresh search before booking and choose the trip with the best complete cost for your needs.
